With most of the UK's depleted gas supply, having come from Scotland, you may think that Scottish gas and electricity consumers would be given a little discount.
Although Scotland does differ from the rest of the UK in many aspects, the power companies argue that distribution to the more remote regions, should make electricity prices in Scotland more expensive.
Not only have we seen many Scottish gas exports, but Scottish electricity is created at a phenomenal rate, indeed much of the British hydro-electric power station capacity is housed in Scotland.
Scottish Gas
In 1997 British Gas Plc. allowed the de-merger of Centrica Plc. British gas then changed its name to BG Plc.
In a move to make domestic customers feel regional, British Gas uses the names Scottish Gas in Scotland, British Gas in England and Nwy Prydain in Wales.
Scotland has become the centre for global excellence for offshore engineering and sub sea exploration.
To date the total yield from the Uk offshore rigs for oil and gas is a staggering £210 Billion.
Although we are exporting at a slower rate, the 2006 - 2007 harvested is expected to bring £12 billion to the exchequer.
Scottish Electricity
Through privatisation the price of electricity in Scotland has been open to market forces.
When the market first opened up, the prices were slightly lower, on average than the rest of the UK.
However, after only a few years of stable trading, Scottish electricity supply prices were 10% higher than the suppliers south of the border.
Do you buy Scottish?
The chances are that a good deal of the European market actually buys Scottish fuel. You should show no loyalties to the badge of your country when choosing your Scottish power provider.
The reality of it all is that all the power companies are vast giants of the corporate world, they are all loosely connected and have all spawned from the state run monopolies of yesteryear.
Be prudent when choosing your Scottish gas and electricity suppliers, go for price first, being very careful not to get tied in for long periods.
Gas and electricity prices are rising globally, and the world output cannot keep pace with demand, so expect no mercy from a Scottish badge on a supplier, they could be from anywhere.
